Wilson School of Dance has flourished into a leading dance training center due to your dedication, motivation, and talent. We have grown from a small school in Crozet, to 15 years in the Wesley Foundation Building, to our own lovely building (a former church) with 2 studios, family friendly ground level waiting and changing rooms, professional floating sprung floors (like those in New York City Ballet), easy on-premise parking, and many amenities.

Established in March 1977 by Juanita Wilson Duquette, the school has earned the highest esteem and respect locally, state-wide and nationally by training outstanding technical and artistic dancers. We believe exposure to various types of dance is beneficial to developing creativity and expression as well as technical expertise. We also believe that a caring, involved student/teacher relationship allowing for individual attention is essential for progressive learning. Attention to technical detail is encouraged at all levels of experience.

Our Mission is to Provide Excellent Instruction in a Friendly and Inspiring Atmosphere Creating Discipline and Self-Esteem for a Lifetime, whether your heart’s desire is to become a professional dancer or to have a physical outlet.

Our students have grown with us; first literally, as we now teach the children and grandchildren of some of our students, and second figuratively, in that the level of expertise students are achieving each year is incredible. In competitions, the Wilson School of Dance Senior Company won the Dance Makers, Inc. National Championship First Prize in Lyrical Jazz as well as winning the Dance Makers, Inc. Mid Atlantic Regional Championship First Prize in both the Lyrical Jazz and Tap categories.  

Two of our former students are now in the world acclaimed Bolshoi Ballet School while other students have attained notoriety as a Soloist with the Merce Cunningham Company and as dancers in European and Japanese Touring Companies, Busch Gardens, and the Governor’s School for the Gifted in Dance. One of our students was crowned Miss Teen Virginia America.  Numerous students now choreograph, teach, and dance in community productions.

Teachers are the backbone of our school.  Positive, encouraging words especially when the movement is challenging, gives renewed motivation and promotes self-esteem in all students.  Our teachers continue to expand their training each year with trips to New York City for classes, conventions, workshops, and the Jazz Dance World Congress. Current choreography and music is inspiring and challenges each student according to his/her skills.  Consistency in our teaching staff provides comfort for young students and enhances continuous dance progress at all levels.

Performance Opportunities enable students to attain higher levels of technique and artistry. Lifetime memories are created each year as students eagerly anticipate the enjoyment of dancing in our "Annual Spring Performance" on a stage with full lighting and costumes. Wilson School of Dance has had the unique opportunity of hosting the Moscow Ballet Company, 1996-2001, where more than 250 of our students were chosen to perform in the Nutcracker with Ms. Wilson coordinating the children’s rehearsals.

Exceptional students have the opportunity to join the Wilson Dance Company (ages 12-20) which has been honored to dance in national events such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the Peach Bowl Halftime Show in Atlanta as well as to perform in local events such as the University of Virginia Old Cabell Hall New Music Ensemble Series, First Night Virginia, Live Arts, Dance Festivals, and the University of Virginia Women's Basketball Half-Time Show.  They have also taken part in Lecture/Demonstrations for New York City Public Schools, as well as in Charlottesville/Albemarle Schools and Organizations. We have 3 Junior Company programs for students ages 8-15 who perform Jazz, Tap and Ballet in community events, schools, and day care programs.
